Installing graphite insulation boards correctly is as important as choosing the right grade. Poor installation — wrong panel orientation, incorrect fastener torque, unmanaged gaps — can reduce thermal performance by 15–30% and cut board life in half. This guide covers the key steps and the most common mistakes.
Safety First: Handling Graphite Boards
- Wear nitrile gloves — graphite dust will contaminate sensitive furnace components.
- Do not drop or impact boards — graphite felt boards are brittle and will crack if dropped on an edge.
- Work in a clean area away from oil, grease, and moisture — contamination baked into the board during first firing causes significant outgassing.
Step 1: Remove Old Boards and Inspect the Structure
Inspect the furnace shell interior, the radiation shield support structure, and all fastener mounting points. Replace any corroded or damaged fastener inserts. Clean out all graphite dust, ash deposits, or foreign material from the previous hot zone.

Step 2: Dry Fit All Panels Before Fastening
Before applying any fasteners, dry-fit the complete set of insulation panels in the hot zone. Check that:
- All panels seat flush against their neighbours with joints tightly closed.
- No panel requires forced fitting — if a panel is too tight, machine it to size rather than forcing it.
- Multi-layer configurations have staggered joints — the joint in layer 2 should fall in the middle of a panel in layer 1, never aligned. Aligned joints create thermal short circuits to the shell.
Step 3: Fasten Correctly
Use only graphite or molybdenum fasteners — never stainless steel above 1,000 °C, as steel oxidises and expands, cracking the board around the fastener hole.
Torque: Do not overtighten. Hand-tight plus one quarter turn is typically sufficient for M6 fasteners in rigid graphite felt.
Number of fasteners: For panels up to 400 × 400 mm, 4 fasteners at the corners. For larger panels (600 × 900 mm), add a central row at 300 mm centres to prevent panel bowing under thermal load.
Step 4: Gap Management

Step 5: Break-In Cycle
After installation, run a break-in cycle before resuming production:
- Pump to operating vacuum.
- Ramp to 600 °C at 5 °C/min — hold 30 minutes to degas surface moisture.
- Ramp to 1,000 °C at 5 °C/min — hold 60 minutes. This stabilises the board structure and seats all panels under their first thermal expansion cycle.
- Ramp to operating temperature — hold 30 minutes, then cool normally.
Do not load production parts in the first cycle. After the break-in cycle, inspect all fasteners for any loosening and retighten as necessary.
