Why Graphite Outperforms Copper for EDM Electrodes
Copper dominated EDM electrode material until fine-grain isostatic graphite became widely available. Today, graphite is the first choice for most die-sinking and micro-EDM applications because of three structural advantages:
⚡ Graphite Electrodes
3–5× faster machining speed (EDM)
No burring — graphite doesn't deform
Higher temperature resistance (3,650 °C)
Lower electrode wear on roughing passes
Lighter weight — easier handling on multi-cavity jobs
Requires dust extraction during electrode machining
🔩 Copper Electrodes
Better surface finish on mirror-polished cavities (VDI 0–4)
No graphite dust during electrode cutting
2–3× slower EDM speed
Heavier — limits electrode size on CNC EDM machines
Higher machining cost per electrode
Lower melting point → more electrode erosion at high current
Rule of thumb: Choose graphite for roughing and semi-finishing of steel, carbide, and titanium moulds. Use copper only when final surface finish must reach mirror polish (Ra <0.1 µm).
EDM Graphite Grades We Supply
The right grade depends on the surface finish required, electrode wear tolerance, and workpiece material. We stock and machine the following grades:
| Grade | Grain Size (µm) | Density (g/cm³) | Shore Hardness | Best Application |
| ISO-63 / EDM-1 | 20–30 | 1.72–1.78 | 50–60 | Large roughing electrodes, steel cavity rough EDM |
| ISO-88 / EDM-2 | 10–15 | 1.78–1.82 | 60–70 | Semi-finishing, medium cavity EDM — most popular grade |
| SF / EDM-3 | 5–8 | 1.82–1.86 | 70–80 | Fine-finishing electrodes, micro-EDM, fine cavity details |
| IG-430U (isostatic) | 5–10 | 1.80–1.85 | 72–80 | High-purity electrodes for Ti, Inconel, and exotic alloy EDM |
| TTK-8 (TOYO TANSO) | 5 | 1.85–1.88 | 80–90 | Ultra-fine detail, mirror-finish graphite EDM, complex profiles |
Not sure which grade fits your job? Send us your workpiece material, cavity size, and required surface finish — we recommend the optimum grade.
