Why Graphite for Sealing Applications

Graphite seal rings are self-lubricating, chemically inert and dimensionally stable at temperature extremes where elastomeric and PTFE seals fail. Standard graphite rings from Expo hold their sealing geometry to 400°C in oxidising (air) atmospheres and up to 2,200°C in inert or vacuum atmospheres — no melting, no phase change, no external lubrication required. The layered crystal structure of graphite provides inherent lubricity, which is why these rings perform in rotating and reciprocating seals where oil lubrication is impractical.

What is the difference between standard, antimony-impregnated and resin-impregnated graphite rings?
Standard graphite suits general-purpose sealing. Antimony impregnation improves resistance to hot, chemically aggressive environments. Resin impregnation is used for heavy-duty applications such as coal-pulveriser shaft sealing (our Coal Mill Carbon Ring). Copper impregnation is available on request for applications needing higher thermal conductivity.

Can I get a three-part or split seal ring?
