Two insulation technologies have dominated industrial furnaces for decades: graphite-based insulation boards and ceramic fibre insulation. In vacuum furnaces specifically, the two materials perform very differently — and understanding those differences is essential for anyone specifying a new hot zone or retrofitting an existing furnace.
Why Vacuum Furnaces Demand Different Insulation
In atmosphere furnaces, ceramic fibre is the standard choice. Vacuum furnaces, however, create a very different set of conditions:
- No convective heat transfer — all heat moves by radiation.
- Presence of strong reducing conditions at high temperature — which attack certain ceramic fibre binders.
- Ultra-low contamination requirements — outgassing from ceramic binders can contaminate the vacuum and the workload.

The Outgassing Problem with Ceramic Fibre in Vacuum
Ceramic fibre blankets use alumina-silica or silica-based fibres held together with an organic binder. When heated in vacuum, this binder outgasses heavily — releasing water vapour, CO2, and organic compounds. In a vacuum furnace processing aerospace alloys, medical implants, or semiconductor components, this contamination is unacceptable.
Graphite insulation boards, once baked out, have negligible outgassing at operating temperature — making them the only practical choice above 1,000 °C in vacuum.
When Ceramic Fibre Might Still Be Used
Ceramic fibre remains relevant only in the cold zone at the furnace door or base, where temperatures are well below 800 °C and vacuum quality is less critical. For everything above 800 °C in the hot zone, graphite insulation board is the correct specification.
