What is Soft Graphite Felt?

Limitations: Soft felt compresses and compacts over time. As it densifies, thermal resistance drops and energy consumption rises. It is also difficult to fasten securely, making it prone to shifting inside the hot zone — creating thermal hot spots on the furnace shell.

What is Rigid Graphite Felt Board?

Rigid graphite felt boards are manufactured by impregnating graphite felt with a carbon binder and curing it under heat and pressure. The result is a self-supporting panel that can be machined, drilled, and fastened like a structural component. Density is typically 0.15–0.35 g/cm³.

Advantages over soft felt:

  • Maintains shape and thickness throughout service life — no compaction, no shifting.
  • Can be bolted or pinned to the furnace structure, preventing movement during thermal cycling.
  • Machineable — custom slots, holes, and cutouts can be added for electrodes and thermocouples.
  • Consistent bulk density means predictable thermal performance from cycle 1 to cycle 3,000.

Which Should You Choose?

For any furnace running above 1200 °C on a regular production schedule, rigid graphite felt boards are almost always the better investment. The higher upfront cost is recovered within 6–12 months through lower energy consumption and reduced replacement frequency.
