Multi-Layer vs Single-Layer Configurations
For high-temperature applications, a multi-layer approach outperforms a single thick board:
- Inner layer (hot face): High-density, high-temperature grade board — directly exposed to radiant heat.
- Outer layer (cold face): Lower-density felt or standard rigid board — bulk thermal resistance at lower cost.
Staggered joints are essential — the joint in layer 2 should fall in the middle of a panel in layer 1, never aligned. Aligned joints create thermal short circuits to the shell.
Factors That Change the Calculation
- Partial pressure operation: Running with backfill gas increases convective heat transfer and requires more insulation than pure vacuum at the same temperature.
- Cycle frequency: High-cycle furnaces benefit from lower-mass insulation (CFC) to reduce heat-up and cool-down energy.
- Board density: Always confirm the thermal conductivity value at your operating temperature when comparing suppliers.
Replacement: Keep the Same Thickness
