Why Graphite for EDM
Graphite electrodes now account for over 70% of EDM tooling globally, displacing copper for all but the finest surface-finish applications. Key advantages: 3โ5ร faster machining, lighter weight enabling larger electrodes, and superior performance in deep-cavity and rib applications.
Grade Selection by Application
| Application | Recommended Grade | Grain Size (ฮผm) | Wear Ratio (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roughing (large cavities) | Standard ISO | 8โ15 | 0.1โ0.5 |
| Semi-finishing | Fine grain | 4โ8 | 0.05โ0.2 |
| Finishing / micro-EDM | Ultra-fine (ETP-10) | 1โ4 | 0.01โ0.05 |
| Deep ribs (>10:1 AR) | High-strength fine | 4โ6 | 0.05โ0.1 |
Machining Guidelines
- Use carbide-tipped or PCD tooling โ HSS wears too rapidly
- Dry machining preferred; if coolant used, avoid water-based for fine-grain grades
- Surface speed: 200โ500 m/min for milling; 0.1โ0.3 mm/rev feed
- Dust extraction essential โ graphite dust is electrically conductive
