Introduction

Carbon fiber insulation boards are the primary thermal barrier in modern vacuum furnace hot zones. Improper design of the insulation package is responsible for over 40% of heat-up inefficiency and most premature board failures. This guide covers geometry, fastening, joints, and lifecycle management.

Panel Geometry & Sizing

  • Board thickness: 25โ€“100 mm depending on operating temperature and target outer shell temperature
  • Panel count minimisation reduces joint count and heat leakage
  • Preferred aspect ratio: length:width โ‰ค 3:1 to prevent warping
  • Minimum overlap at joints: 50 mm (tongue-and-groove preferred)

Fastening Systems

MethodProsCons
Graphite bolts (CFC)Thermally matched, no cold spotsHigher cost, min. clearance required
Ceramic pinsLow costThermal mismatch, cracks at >1600 ยฐC
Graphite cementSeamless jointsDifficult repair, irreversible

Replacement Intervals

Boards should be inspected every 500 furnace cycles or 12 months. Replacement is indicated when: board thickness loss exceeds 15%, surface cracking exposes interior fibres, or thermal survey shows >10% increase in outer shell temperature.
